A Publication of the Alumni Corporation of the Eta Mu Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity

Message From The President By Bill Bonacorda '91
With our 25th year of the Eta Mu Chapter coming to an end, the opportunities for the Alumni Association have only just begun. As president, I feel the time is now for the building blocks for a sound financial backbone of this corporation to be methodically put into place. With the concentrated efforts of the officers and continued support from the members, our plans will be in full effect by the completion of the 1998 academic year. These plans are nothing more than structure to what has been talked and talked about since I've been a member of the fraternity. What should be done with Century Club donations? Should we move or build an addition? What happens when the actives don't pay their bills? Is the corporation only about good parties for the one's who visit? The answers to these questions will be realized, addressed, and answered in the next calendar year! Our goal is to set a precedent for the new graduates and rekindle interest with the older alumni. The plan is in place and the time is now to support the association to meet the challenge at hand. The specific plan and how each one of us will be the topic of our next newsletter.
Friend and Neighbor of Eta Mu Passes to Chapter Eternal
L.J. "Red" Hazelton, long time neighbor of the Fraternity, passed away in his home of complications from heart failure. Most any brother who took the time to meet Red found him to be very personable. He was very supportive of our chapter. A fraternity could not have asked for a better person to be a neighbor. The following was taken from an article in the Toledo Blade. Mr. Hazelton was born in North Baltimore, Ohio in 1923. He was graduated from Findlay High School in 1940. Following his graduation, he became a U.S. Merchant marine for four years and traveled extensively during World War II. Mr. Hazelton was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Georgia for two years. He married Eloise Raabe in North Baltimore in 1950 and the couple began living in Findlay. Mr. and Mrs. Hazelton opened The House of Hair Design in 1969. The business is now operated by their daughters. Mrs. Hazelton said that her husband enjoyed attending his grandchildren's athletic events. "He was a very family-oriented man. He loved his family more than anything on earth," Mrs. Hazelton said.

Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Formal Huge Success

The Alumni and Active Chapters celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Eta Mu's founding with a weekend of brotherhood, partying, golf and fun, highlighted with a black tie dinner and dance held at the Findlay Inn Convention Center last April.

Starting with the annual golf outing Friday, (held this year at the Hillcrest Golf Course) and concluding with the Alumni -vs- Active Foquatch game, this years formal weekend was by far a great accomplishment of organization and teamwork. "Without the talents of Bruce Olson, I don't think we could have ever pulled it off!" says brother Art Balderas '84, a member of the 25th Anniversary Formal Committee. All the members of the committee were honored at the formal presentations and, are again here for a job well done.

Carlos Moreno '81, who received a commemorative 25th Anniversary watch as a member of the winning golf team, should be commended for his efforts in getting the word out early and often in his humorous and informative newsletters. Kevin Sweeney '97 organized a super golf outing and will do so again for this year's Theta Chi Open.

Over 250 brothers, family and friends representing classes from 1974 to 2000 attended the formal dinner which included the yearly recap of honors for both the chapter and alumni. Jonathon "Johnny Cat" Zimmerman '97 received the John P. Coyne award for outstanding active brother while Mike Soldwish '83 took home the Gary D. Schmidt award for outstanding contributions by an alumni. Following a fantastic meal, the evening progressed into dancing and reminiscing for all who attended. Most guests stayed at the Findlay Inn and as a result, the "brotherhood" lasted well into the early morning.

As is tradition, the annual Foquatch game between the alumni and actives was a fitting close to a great weekend. As is also tradition, the Alumni won again!

Overall, the best job was done by all the brothers, family and friends who attended. After all the planning and work, that is what really makes the greatest contribution. Thanks to all who attended. See you this year!
